c1909 Flying Merkel Single
In the early years of production, the term “Flying” was not yet used by the factory, and the “Merkel’s” were manufactured out of Middletown, OH. Only after the factory moved it’s operation to Pottstown, PA, did the name “Flying Merkel” come into use for their single and twin cylinder motorcycles. This beautiful example of the single cylinder belt drive model is in very good condition and sports an early restoration, probably done back in the 1950’s or 1960’s. The give away for the date of the resto is, the early enthusiasts used chrome plating on the bright work instead of going back to the original nickel finish when restoring the bikes. This early restoration and it’s current patina almost insures that this motorcycle is all original without any reproduction parts used in the build. The belt drive is engaged using the control arm off of the gas tank through the Eclipse clutch to the back wheel. The original copper gas tank is in very good to excellent condition and the frame is in great shape with the exception of an earlier repair just behind the pedal crank. This very rare machine would make an excellent addition to any collection and, with a little refreshing and a rebuild on the magneto, this old girl will be ready for the road once more. Selling on a bill of sale only.
